Your skin is exposed to a lot every single day. From sunshine and harsh winds too cold temperatures, smog, dry air, and more, the skin experiences just about everything in the environment. Not only that, but your skin goes through natural changes as you get older. These external factors can speed up the aging process, leading to the formation of premature fine lines and wrinkles. Looking older than you can lead you to feel quite self-conscious. Apex Surgical can help to restore a smoother, more youthful appearance, and your confidence, with Botox.

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA approved injectable treatment designed to reduce, and eliminate, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance to your face. By reducing lines and wrinkles, you also receive a significant boost of confidence. Botox is a form of the neurotoxin Botulinum toxin A. It is a purified protein that serves both cosmetic as well as medical purposes.

What Issues Can Botox Treat?

Botox can be used to treat some different cosmetic and medical issues. Common issues include:

  • Forehead lines.
  • Lines around the eyes.
  • Lines around the mouth.
  • Lines on the lips.
  • Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.
  • Chronic migraines.
  • Muscle spasms and muscle twitching.
  • Bruxism
  • TMJ disorder.

What to Expect During Botox Treatment

The process for getting Botox injections is fairly quick and straightforward. Treatments take only about 20 minutes to complete. Fine tipped needles are used to inject Botox directly into your skin. There is no need for any type of local or topical anesthetic. Patients report minimal discomfort, often a slight pinch when the needle is injected.

Once injected into the skin, Botox goes to work disrupting the signals sent from nerves to specific muscles that contact and lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. By blocking these signals, the targeted muscles cannot contract. As a result, the lines and wrinkles smooth out, leading to a much less noticeable appearance. In many cases, the appearance of lines can be completely eliminated. Bruising at the injection sites is common, and typically disappears within just a couple of days. You generally see full results of your treatment within 3 to 7 days.

Is Botox Permanent?

Botox is not a permanent treatment. Over time, the effects of the treatment begin to wear off. As this happens, the signals sent from the nerves to the targeted facial muscles are restored. The muscles can contact once more, which can lead to the reformation of fine lines and wrinkles. Typically, results last 3 to 4 months. To maintain the results, periodic retreatments are necessary.

How Safe is Botox?

Botox is very safe. Even so, just like any other type of procedure, there are some risks involved. Some of the most common risks of Botox include muscle drooping, freezing, or asymmetry. More serious, but less common, risks include difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing. Because we are highly experienced in the use of Botox, we can do everything we can to reduce your risk of developing any sort of complications.

Botox and TMJ Treatment

While commonly used for cosmetic purposes, Botox is also an effective treatment for TMJ disorder, specifically a TMJ disorder caused by bruxism. With strategically injected Botox, we can target the muscles that contract to cause grinding and clenching. This helps to weaken the muscles, preventing bruxism from happening. As a result, your bruxism and TMJ disorder-related symptoms ease.

With Botox, we can help to reduce, and even eliminate, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restoring a smoother, more youthful appearance to your face. Call Apex Surgical at 250.371.7076 for more information and to schedule your consultation today.
